Rather, we “hang out,” which is exactly what it feels like-clinging to something that’s difficult to grasp. We don’t possess these epic love stories, nor do we date or, god forbid, court. My generation does many things well, but romance isn’t one of them. ![]() Maybe it’s because I’m a writer, maybe it’s because I’m a romantic, maybe it’s simply that I’m a sucker for a good story, but I’m envious of older folks’ “how we met” tales. My reaction to that sentence was a snort of laughter. I'll be using more source material this time around (but don't worry, there will still be gifs). Now, the first installment in this series made me so angry, I could barely write a coherent review. No matter, it's still bad, and I'm still going to have a hell of a lot of fun writing about it. Or maybe I've built up a bit of an immunity. Don't get me wrong, it was still awful, but the rage-inducing badness of the first wasn't quite as powerful here. Unfortunately (for me), Fifty Shades Darker wasn't quite as bad as as its predecessor. ![]() Plus, I had a few people tell me they couldn't wait for my reviews of the second and third Fifty books. Reading books this awful actually brings a certain amount of joy into my life. ![]() Why, for the fun factor, of course! Bad writing tends to make me giddy because I'm much better at being a horribly judgmental person critic than I am at.well, most anything else. Why, you ask? Why, when I so thoroughly despised Fifty Shades of Grey, would I do this to myself? ![]() ![]() ![]() The movie would claim four Oscars for cinematography, original score, song (“Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head”) and original screenplay. ![]() But audiences ate up the anti-hero wisecracks (“Who are those guys?”) and the handsome though less-than-perfect examples of male machismo. ![]() Initially, critics didn’t quite get William Goldman‘s nominated script as a determined posse pursue the pair after they pull off a series of train robberies and run off to Bolivia. Meanwhile, a different kind of shoot-’em-up was also in the running in the form of a revisionist Western about two real-life outlaws, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” a buddy pic starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Not everything needs a twist ending, especially one so shoddily supported by the story. Personally, I’m well over this trend of authors trying to emulate Gone Girl without understanding why Gone Girl was so effective. But that just raises more questions and makes the twist thinner: why marry her in the first place if you don’t love her? Is Mark meant to be a psychopath? Why don’t we see more psychopathic behavior from him, then? There certainly wasn’t enough in Mark’s behavior for me to buy that ending as believable. Presumably, the conclusion we’re meant to draw is that he never actually loved her, especially given this “look” he got in his eyes as he died. ![]() That means there’s not time for any major change of heart on his part, whether it’s deeming Erin a liability or falling out of love with her. We know Mark hired Patrick to terrorize Erin and get her off the scent only a day or two after they got home from their honeymoon. With piercing insight and fascinating twists, Something in the Water challenges the reader to confront the hopes we desperately cling to, the ideals we’re tempted to abandon, and the perfect lies we tell ourselves.
